How to Get More Out Of Every Book You Read

Nov 29, 2023

Reading is one of the first personal development skills we learn...

For me, it was the "gateway skill" from which I learned a lot of other skills like:

- law of attraction

- meditation

- entrepreneurship

Most people who are into personal development read a lot of books...

But when it comes to actually remembering

the important stuff they read, that's where the problem is...

If you are one of the people who struggle with reading comprehension, don't worry.

There are a number of things you can do to improve your skills.

In this article, we will discuss 7 proven ways to improve your

reading comprehension without it feeling like a chore.

  1. Choose books that you are interested in.

One of the best ways to make reading more enjoyable is to choose books that you are interested in.

If you are interested in the topic of a book, you are more likely to be motivated to read it and pay attention to the details.

Additionally, if you can see how the information in a book can help you to achieve your goals, you will be more likely to retain it.

For example, if you are interested in learning how to code, you might choose to read a book on Python programming.

This book will provide you with the information and skills you need to be successful in your coding endeavors.

  1. Set realistic reading goals.

If you set unrealistic reading goals, you are more likely to become discouraged and give up. Start by setting small, achievable goals, such as reading for 15 minutes each day. As you become more proficient, you can gradually increase your reading time.

It is also important to be flexible with your reading goals. If you are busy one day, don't beat yourself up if you can't read for as long as you had planned. Simply pick up your book the next day and start where you left off.

  1. Take breaks.

It is important to take breaks when you are reading. This will help you to stay focused and to avoid getting overwhelmed. Get up and move around, or do something else that you enjoy for a few minutes. Then come back to your reading refreshed and ready to learn.

A good rule of thumb is to take a break every 20-30 minutes. You may need to take more frequent breaks if you are reading a challenging text.

  1. Reread difficult passages.

If you find yourself struggling to understand a passage, don't be afraid to reread it. Sometimes, all you need is to read the passage again to fully grasp the author's meaning.

As you reread the passage, try to identify any key concepts or terms that you may be unfamiliar with. Look up these concepts or terms in a dictionary or online encyclopedia. This will help you to better understand the passage and to retain the information.

  1. Use graphic organizers.

Graphic organizers can be a helpful tool for visualizing and organizing information. There are many different types of graphic organizers, such as mind maps, concept maps, and Venn diagrams.

Choose a graphic organizer that is appropriate for the material you are reading and use it to visualize the key concepts and relationships between them. This will help you to better understand and remember the information.

For example, if you are reading a book about the history of the United States, you could create a timeline graphic organizer to help you visualize the different events and eras.

  1. Discuss what you read with others.

Discussing what you read with others is a great way to test your understanding of the material and to get different perspectives on the topic. Talk to your friends, family, classmates, or colleagues about the book you are reading.

As you discuss the book, ask each other questions and share your thoughts and interpretations. This will help you to deepen your understanding of the material and to see it in new ways.

  1. Make connections between what you are reading and your own life.

Thinking about how the information in a book relates to your own life can help you to better understand and remember it. As you are reading, ask yourself questions such as:

  • How can I apply this information to my own life?

  • What lessons can I learn from this book?

  • How does this information relate to my own experiences?

By making connections between what you are reading and your own life, you will be more likely to retain the information and find it meaningful.

That’s it!

Those are the 7 ways to read more & retain more.
